Tips from Students Completing the ELG Survey

	Using that word after making Mnemonics* that is very easy to memorise that word. [*ELG Administrator note: you can learn about Mnemonics here: http://www.fun-with-words.com/mnemonics.html ]

	To remember new words or phrases: write it on a post-it sticker and paste it in your room or on your computer monitor

	To remember new words or phrases: Write a diary using the new words I learnt and [am] fond of, especially the adjective words.

	I reckon the best way to pick up expressions I need in everyday life is to mingle with native speakers, but it is hard to do so. That's why I sometimes have to suffer to learn expressions, regardless of how simple they are, through movies, radio shows, and TVs.

	I tend to read lots of journals, course related newspapers (e.g. financial review). It helps me in professional writing, especially choosing specific English words.

	I think reading is the best way to improve your language skills. The local newspapers and magazines are very good reading stuff. Furthermore, some online studying community can give you some tips and hints on language study in details. I would recommend the bilingual websites.

	I am still feeling not confident to speak English, but I try to join social activities at my university to force myself to speak English more.

	I think it is very important for us to use every opportunity to speak English. The speaking is always the most difficult parts for us. Once we build confident to speak English rather than always worry about making mistake and embarrassment, we will improve our English faster.

	It's important to be immersed in a culture in order to learn the language of that culture.

	Stay away from people who speak your language and expose yourself to English as much as possible; when you hang out with people who speak your language, it's easy to speak your native tongue with them as it comes naturally, but it won't help you improve your English skills.

	It takes a little time to understand the Dialect of Australian people and I am feeling happy here because I have been to Japan, Germany, Malaysia, Russia, Thailand and was having a language problem because they used to speak in their own language but in Australia I can easily communicate in English.

	It will be better to have a language exchange program for us international students, i.e. the local students who are willing to learn a foreign language like Mandarin, and he/she and I can form a mutual-learning group to teach each other our mother tongues.

	It is not difficult for us as an international students to write our essay, but it is really hard for us to completely understand the lecture and reading. We need time to understand what lecturer told in English first, but we always lack time to interpret their meaning and think about more even lack time to ask questions. About the reading, we read very slowly and could not wholely understand what the authors real meaning.
